Ella Guru Presents
The Long Island Iced Tea Party
Amsterdam, August 1999
(Stuckism link)
Ella Guru used to spank Tory MPs in Fetish clubs in London. This is her first exhibition of paintings in Amsterdam. Miss Guru puts her wig on and answers a few questions in preparation for her summer exhibition at Getto:
Who are you?
'Contrary to popular belief I myself am not a drag queen. Born with only two (very nice I might add) legs, I have remained through my life a female specie. I began drawing at the age of 4, when I had a transgendered doll who I said was married to him/herself.'
Your training (if any)?
'I grew up amongst the cows and cornfields and even attended the Art College in Columbus, Ohio, USA. But my real training was in the Peek-a-Boo Lounge topless club in West Florida, after which and I was Europe bound, never to return.
'My nine years in London has taken me through squats and 22 story tower blocks, from East End tranny clubs to jaunts around Lithuania by bicycle, and years spent in an Indie pop band called the Voodoo Queens.'
Why have you decided to paint beehive trannies?
'Though Iíve always been into dames with dongs, the current series of paintings began with a picture of the transvestite poet and international cult figure Sexton Ming. Last summer I continued the series while in France, and participated in several exhibitions around London. I went to Amsterdam during the Gay Games, where I was again inspired by the famous Dusty of the Queens Head.
'I enjoy gender confusion and delight in nothing more than to lift up a galís skirt only to discover a sundial. Why? Well, why not?'
Recent exhibitions include 121, the Anarquist Centre in Brixton, the Museum of Pop Culture in London and the Fringe gallery in Newark, New Jersey, near New York City.
Miss Guru also a founding member of the new art movement, Stuckism, a group of painters whose outlook is the visual equivalent to rock and roll- popular, accessible art about pressing contemporary issues, e.g. men in beehive wigs. The Stuckists are bitterly opposed to Brit Shit and other elitist art school pretensions, i.e. most contemporary art. The diverse group includes world-renowned musician, poet and painter Billy Childish.
