The Deptford Beach Babes, 6 March 2004 at the Eye: Jenny, Simon, Mike, Sexton, Ella and Chris.

About the Deptford Beach Babes:

  • first formed in 1995, when the Voodoo Queens split up and Ella and Mary decided that, instead of the predicted Motorhead/Melvins tribute band, they would form a surf band.
  • Sexton Ming joined the band in 1996 when they wanted a male, grass-skirt wearing go-go dancer. Sexton proved too talented for his own good and ended up singing and playing rhythm guitar.
  • The band split up in 1998 when they ran out of new songs and couldn't be bothered writing more.
  • reformed in 2002 with original drummer Mike, and recruited new members, Simon on rhythm guitar, Chris Cornetto (from Naked Ruby, and colloborator with Andy Diagram) on trumpet, and the Immortal Johnny Dance(of Dark Karaoke and Club of Rome) on vocals. Sexton Ming "retired from rock & roll".
  • Realised what great timing their reunion was when the Beach Babes ended up doing gigs with the ultimately compatible Naked Ruby, with whom they now share members - the above mentioned Chris, plus Lil Ruby belly dancing with the Babes, in exchange for Ella sometimes falling over -I mean, dancing - with Naked Ruby.
  • 2003: released their limited edition lathe cut 7", to no critical acclaim (as they don't believe in giving free copies to journos) and much popular appeal.
  • 2003: gigging in London, Jersey and Germany...
  • discovered that the surf haven known as Deptford Beach (1 mile East of Greenwich, on the Thames) is now closed. Benefit and/or wake now being planned....
  • In 2004, founding member Mary and singer the Immortal Johnny Dance left to start a new life in Thighland (Thailand). New bassist Jenny, formerly of Spy 51, shaped up nicely. Sexton Ming returned for guest vocals for one gig before his retirement from all performing. Other guest vocalists are Nick "Nasty" Marsh, formerly of Flesh for Lulu and currently of Urban Voodoo Machine and the Naked Goat, and Jowe Head currently in Angel Racing Food, formerly in the Swell Maps and Television Personalities.
  • The first gig with the new line up was at the Eye, 79-81 Stoke Newington High Street, N16, on 6 March 2004. Despite near electrocution at the Spread Eagle, a former strip pub in Shoredtich, in May, the band were still all alive and anticipated more shows soon.
  • The band took a break from gigging again in autum 2004 while Ella and Sexton launched their biggest collaboration yet: Lucy. Meanwhile Mary and the Immortal Johnny Dance survived the tsunami and helped the relief effort in Thailand.
  • Gigging resumed in July 2005, with the Somertowns Festival and more Brixton shows with Naked Ruby. Tigerlily made her debut singing "Firewater."
  • In 2006, The Beach Babes and Naked Ruby played a benefit for MEND UK, working with Palestinians for peace. Jenny left for Australia, and Mary returned briefly before leaving again to collaborate with the Immortal Johnny Dance on baby Ethan. Paul-Ronney Angel of the Urban Voodoo Machine guested on harmonica at the opening of the Stuckist show at Tesco Disco. The full length CD finally came out on RIM. Singer Tigerlily moved to the USA (traitor!)
  • 2007: Fabulous new line includes singer Vicki of Japanese Intelligence Mind Control, and bassist Charley of Spy 51, the Bintangs and many other bands, and Phoebe on trumpet, who has blown us all off stage. Guest singers and musicians will continue to appear, possible even Lynda Beast of the cross-dressed quartet.
  • 2008: is starting with a bang, with more Vicki Churchill, The Sexiest Woman in the World, plus guest vocals from Jane Ruby. Recording early in the year with new songs from both vocalists.

  • Ella Guru Gig Saturday 19 January 2002 with Joe Whitney and the Tropics of Cancer, at the Garage, London, went smashingly. For audience and enuthusiasm it was one of the tops gigs of recent years, ranking right up there with the Tasty Ones' Sonic Youth support in 1999. Ella played guitar and Sexton sang "Bomber" and "Seventeen".
